Our name evokes the coldest and most unforgiving side of the mountain: the north face. We've helped explorers reach the highest peaks in the Himalayas. Ironically, the legend of The North Face® was born on a beach. More specifically, in the North Beach district of San Francisco, just 45 meters above sea level. It was here that in 1966, a duo of avid hikers chose to pursue their dreams. and set up a small business specializing in mountaineering equipment. It didn't take long for the humble boutique to grow into a recognized retailer of high-end climbing and hiking gear, taking on the now familiar name of The North Face. In 1968, the team moved across the bay from San Francisco to the heart of bustling Berkeley, and began designing and manufacturing their own mountaineering gear and clothing.
