MALIBU SANDALS

A coastal shoe company from Malibu, California. These beginnings date back to a serious search for a versatile ergonomic sandal for roaming the inspiring hills and coastal beaches of Malibu. Through these explorations, the role of huarache sandals in the history of popularizing surf culture in the late 1950s in Southern California fascinated this company. A pop culture version arose from this 1950s marketing mix of Beach Blanket Bingo, the Beach Boys, and Dick Dale - and it was all "happening on the Pacific Coast Highway." Local PCH surfers were in shock. They found solace in the waves and uncrowded beaches south of the U.S. border of Baja Mexico. Alas, “The Baja Boom” was born. During their travels, they purchased Huarache sandals, as well as Serapes, Ponchos and local jewelry from the indigenous people of small coastal villages. Surfers and hippies wore these Mexican items, popularizing them in California's subcultures and surfing community, hence names such as "surfer sandals" for the Huarache. Our homage to this Mexican heritage silhouette was simple: create a functional woven sandal born from ergonomics suitable for all-day wear. This is a woven style sandal inspired by the practical heritage of the Mexican Huarache sandal. We honor the history it carries, from the shores of Baja Mexico to Southern California.

Inspiration behind Malibu sandals

With the aim of creating the most comfortable, elegant and most modern in the world, MALIBU® is inspired by the cultural history and physical beauty of the California coast, particularly Malibu. The approach of looking to the past to move forward is a valuable design strategy that continues to inform its methods of developing shoe designs and engineering techniques. As with any design over time, innovation and evolution are inevitable. Initially, MALIBU® found inspiration in the ancient craft of making Mexican Huarache sandals. These sandals date back centuries before European colonial influence.

The word “huarache” comes from the term “kwarachi” from Tarascan, a language spoken by the people Purépecha from Michoacán. Additionally, their origins draw clear connections between Mayan Caites sandals and pre-Hispanic footwear seen on ancient codices.
Traditionally handcrafted and crafted from rawhide, the huarache's primitive design language presents a finely woven pattern that is very durable and proven to stand the test of time. MALIBU SANDALS ® is now available at Shop STRICTLY 2 rue Saint James 33000 Bordeaux and on our Online Shop.
