Pendleton is a privately held, sixth-generation family business. 1863: Thomas Kay, an English weaver, begins manufacturing woolen products in Oregon. 1876: Kay's daughter Fannie marries C.P. Bishop, combining experience in woolen manufacturing and specialty retailing. 1909: New mill opens in Pendleton, Oregon, still in operation today. 1912: The company acquires a weaving mill in Washougal, Washington, still in operation today. The foundation of Pendleton Woolen Mills, Inc., is its vertical manufacturing, which controls wool manufacturing from wool purchase to finished product. Wool processing takes place in Pendleton-owned mills.
