The company was founded in 1916 in Finland by the company AB Sportartiklar Oy and uses a bear as its logo. In 1920, AB Sportartiklar Oy renamed itself Karhu which means bear in Finnish. Karhu mainly produces discs and javelins before producing running shoes and spikes. The brand distinguished itself at the 1920 Summer Olympics where, among other things, it equipped the Flying Finns. Paavo Nurmi won five medals at the 1924 Summer Olympics with Karhu spikes. In 1930, Karhu expanded his production to cross-country skiing and ski jumping. She equipped the Finnish army with camouflage, skis and tents during the Continuation War and World War II. Karhu sold the three stripes logo to Adidas in 1951 for 1,600 euros and two bottles of whiskey. Karhu won 15 medals during of the 1952 Summer Olympics, three of which by Emil Zátopek. From 1960, Karhu uses the M logo.
