The Dassler brothers, Adolf and Rudolf, who had founded a shoe manufacturing company, the "Schuhfabrik Gebrueder Dassler" (Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory) before World War II, fell out and split up in 1948. Adolf then founded Adidas, based on his nickname "Adi" and the first syllable of his surname, "Das," while his brother Rudolf founded the sports brand Puma, a name that can be pronounced in all languages.
