In 1922, Midwesterner and hat enthusiast George S. Bailey founded the Bailey Hat Company in Los Angeles, California. Bailey saw a need for a hat company that could cater not only to the West Coast market, but also to western wear. George Bailey discovered a large, yet untapped customer base in Southern California and dedicated himself to providing them with quality hats and stylish styling. The American West was booming, and Los Angeles was leading the way. A population explosion was underway, and thanks to the proliferation of ranches, farms, mines, oil fields, and, of course, film, Southern California's economy was growing at a dizzying pace. By the early 1920s, Los Angeles-based movie studios accounted for nearly one-fifth of California's annual manufacturing output, and it was there that George Bailey would launch his business. It directly addressed the needs of the "New West" by equipping ranchers, businessmen, oil magnates, and, more recently, movie stars, with "the finest hat possible."
