Chief Joseph
Created in the early 1920s, the Chief Joseph design remains one of Pendleton's most popular blankets. It commemorates the heroism of one of the Northwest's greatest Nez Perce warriors, Chief Joseph. His Nez Perce name was "Hin-mahtoo-yah-lat-kert," meaning "Thunder Coming Down the Hill."
The Nez Perce were renowned for their warrior skills, their breeding of Appaloosa horses, their support and guidance of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and their efforts to broker peace with the U.S. government. The Chief Joseph blanket is the oldest blanket still produced by Pendleton Woolen Mills. Its harmonious design is adorned with arrowheads symbolizing courage and pointing in all directions of Mother Earth. Made in the USA. Not covered with kraft paper. Felt binding. 40 cm x 40 cm
