Wagashi is the Japanese art of making small, beautiful treats, the appearance of which is as important as the taste. Most often plant-based, wagashi come in a wide variety of shapes and brighten up any plate. Attention to detail, creativity and expertise are key elements of this ritual. Wagashi combines culinary art with authentic heritage and satisfaction for the pleasure of the senses. One of the Kizuna packs of the season, the Wagashi pack, encompasses these influences in its colorful and thoughtful designs. Dressed in a pastel lavender color, the Contender features a special wagashi motif on its tongue and a wagashi kanji on the heel. The Runbird's premium navy rubberized leather is inspired by the dark plates used to serve wagashi.
The Contender is one of the latest styles that has been brought back to life from Mizuno's impressive archive. Straight from the 1995 racing offering, this was a neutral, incredibly lightweight trainer for beginning runners. Its design aesthetic created a common thread between the Sky Medal and the Mondo Control, and it still provides a counterpoint to their current iterations even now.
